Glycogen Metabolism Simplified

Glycogen Metabolism Overview

Glycogen metabolism can be simplified if you can break this large storage molecule into the smaller molecules it is made of. Glycogen is simply a long chain of Glucose molecules that have been linked together for storage purposes and regulation of blood glucose levels.

Glycogen metabolism is also an important process because it can remove single molecules of glucose and convert it into intermediates that are used in other glucose related processes such as Glycolysis , the Pentose Phosphate Pathway, liver metabolism, or even as fuel for the brain which only uses glucose for energy.

Why so many options?

Since glycogen can release glucose molecules in a form that is used by many other processes, the cells and the body as a whole has more control and can better regulate energy sources you consume.
